Statement of RANDY JOHNSON, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Scotts Valley

Occupation: Scotts Valley Council Member     Age: 48

Education and Qualifications: I have enjoyed being your representative for the past four years. I feel I’ve helped the City make great strides in many key areas:

  • Rebuilt and beautified Scotts Valley Drive at an affordable price
  • Enhanced our tax base through business expansion, including the Inn at Scotts Valley
  • Maintained a standard of excellence in our police department
  • Improved our parks and recreational facilities, including the soccer fields at Skypark
  • Helped establish a recycled-water plant

I have listened to the concerns and desires of the people of this community. As a former teacher and coach, I understand the needs of our young people. I will work to keep after-school recreational programs innovative and affordable for children and their working parents. Our kids deserve safe places to play and have fun. A skate park and community center are top priorities.

After a lot of hard work, a town center is within our grasp at Skypark. Our library needs more space and longer hours. We need balance in our growth and in the way we manage our resources. I hope you will give me the opportunity to help reach these goals for our community by giving me your support. Thank you.

Statement of CHUCK WALKER, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Scotts Valley

Occupation: Mayor    Age: 44

Education and Qualifications:
Current Mayor and Councilmember
Former Planning Commissioner.
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from CalPoly.

Under my leadership as Mayor and Councilmember, many good things have been brought to Scotts Valley. Specifically these are: the rebuilding of Scotts Valley Drive; enhancement of our parks; and a balanced budget each and every year. I have helped reduce the cost burden of providing services to our community, by making grant money a priority, to offset these expenses. Result: over $4 million has been obtained for various projects. Along with those improvements, we now have an excellent Fourth of July celebration, and police services have implemented a life-saving, first response AED program, due directly to my efforts.

I am deeply devoted to sustaining and enhancing the high quality of life we all enjoy here in Scotts Valley. I will strive to develop the much desired business town center at Skypark and aim to help secure funding for a new community center. I hope that you would join me in my vision and vote to re-elect Chuck Walker to City Council. Thank you.

Statement of SHERYL AINSWORTH, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Scotts Valley

Occupation: Incumbent         Age: 45

Education and Qualifications: I bring experience, leadership, and vision to the Council. Locally, I have concentrated on intelligent planning, environmental stewardship, and quality of life issues. Regionally, I've been working to ensure that our voice is heard at the County level.

Experience: I have served on many local subcommittees, including the Skypark Commercial, affordable housing, and water subcommittees. I currently chair the Santa Margarita Groundwater Basin Advisory Committee, tackling the groundwater aquifer overdraft problem in our area. Regionally, I serve on LAFCO, which oversees district and city growth, the S.C. County Transportation Commission and the S.C. Metropolitan Transit District Board.

Leadership: I successfully founded our July 4th celebration and the new Arts Commission. I joined with other council members to bring the Scotts Valley Drive improvement project to the ballot and to buy land for our future community center.

Vision: My first priority is to continue striving to build a town center in Skypark, which I believe will be vital to our future economic stability, as well as to our sense of community. My next concern is growth: how to preserve our quality of life, how to guide growth and how to protect resources like water and open space.

Statement of ALECIA D. BIDDISON, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Scotts Valley

Occupation: Planning Commissioner/Businesswoman

Education and Qualifications: Born and raised on the Central Coast, I settled in Scotts Valley to share my education and work experience in the community where I live. I became active in local politics at the request of my friends and neighbors. I was appointed to serve as a Planning Commissioner for Scotts Valley because of my strong positions regarding
  • water conservation and resource management
  • responsible development
  • community consensus building
  • creative ways of developing a thriving downtown and paying for our on-going public services

With a B.A. in Political Science focused on Planning Administration, I have gained the necessary education to be able to contribute a positive impact in our community.  I am a co-founder of a high tech start-up company in Scotts Valley.  I attribute my success in business and grassroots community building to the many opportunities I received in my 13 years of military reserves combined with my education and work experience.

As a Council Member, I will continue to focus on reasonable and compatible growth that reflects the needs and desires of the community along with bringing new ideas for increasing our ability to pay for public services. Please visit and contribute your thoughts at www.biddison.com

Statement of NICK VAN BRUGGEN, Candidate for
Member of City Council (Short Term)
City of Scotts Valley

Occupation: Regional Manager         Age: 46

Education and Qualifications: I am a University of California graduate and a 28 year local resident. My wife and I chose Scotts Valley as the place to raise our family because of its beauty, location and small town atmosphere. I have been involved in community groups since coming to Scotts Valley.

As manager for a high tech company, I understand the need for a vital business community and a healthy job base. I also understand the need to manage growth in order to protect our quality of life. If we are choking on traffic congestion, we will cease to be a desirable location for current residents as well as new ones. With reasonable environmental protections, we can preserve our few remaining large open spaces and still provide for residential and commercial growth.

In recent years, many in our community have come to feel that the current City Council is not as responsive to ordinary citizens as it is to various other interests. As an ordinary citizen, I have worked hard to promote greater public involvement in the democratic process. If I am elected to the City Council, my top priority will be to ensure full public participation in our City Government.
