Statement of JAKE FATHY, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Santa Cruz

Occupation: student/activist/athlete/waiter Age: 24

Education and Qualifications: I cannot profess to have a lengthy political career… but that is a positive attribute. Yet uncorrupted by years of holding office, I am not an arrogant candidate, but one who eagerly hopes to serve as a vessel for community input. With a diverse constituency, Santa Cruz needs a wider base of perspectives from its councilmembers. Throughout my experience in Santa Cruz, I have been personally affected by exploding rents and the cost of life. We need city policies to better balance the needs of the community, the university, and business. I pledge to take my appreciation of the average citizen’s needs into office and work for progressive change.

My credentials include:
  • Graduate of Rio Americano H.S., Sacramento
  • Bachelor of Arts, History, University of California, Santa Cruz, 12/2000

In addition, I have either served or am serving in the following clubs and organizations: Students for Bill Bradley, Rotary, Cowell Senate, The Boys and Girls Club, OPERS advisory committee, ICSA’s Community service project fund, and UCSC men’s basketball.

I love our unique community. If elected to office, I will do my best to serve every man, woman, and child to the best of my ability, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status.

Statement of BONNIE MORR, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Santa Cruz

Occupation: SCMTD Bus Operator/Unionist/ Wife/Mother Age: 51

Education and Qualifications: I’m very concerned about our city. After 30 years of living and raising a family here, with many years of community service, being a labor union representative for the UTU, I feel I am well qualified to seek the City Council position.

I believe in honor and accountability for all areas of public service and city government. I would represent all of the people and develop a sustainable community that creates a healthy environment that deals with the issues of traffic, labor, housing, city schools, energy usage and transportation. We must improve and preserve the quality of life for everyone.

Statement of EMILY REILLY, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Santa Cruz

Occupation: Bakery Owner Age: 53

Education and Qualifications: Santa Cruz is truly someplace special.

I’m running for City Council because I want to be more involved in the community where I was educated, where my children grew, where my business began and has prospered.

I’ve lived in this unique community since 1979.

As a mother, as a business owner, as a City Transportation Commissioner, the most important thing I’ve learned over the last two decades is to listen.

People want to be included in the processes that impact their lives.

I will include you in the process of solving our transportation problems, of finding ways to build affordable housing.

I will make decisions that protect our neighborhoods and our greenbelt.

I will work to forge unity within the City’s leadership.

I want to make sure that Santa Cruz remains the special place we all want it to be.

I would appreciate your vote.

Statement of SCOTT KENNEDY, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Santa Cruz

Occupation: Staff of Resource Center for Nonviolence Age: 51

Education and Qualifications: Santa Cruz needs leadership with vision, practical experience and demonstrated skill to work towards constructive, sustainable solutions to the issues we face.

I bring to this challenge a record of service and achievement: a lifetime commitment to social justice, eight years on the City Council, 25 years with the Resource Center for Nonviolence, and extensive community volunteer involvement.

I have provided leadership on expanding programs for homeless people, seniors, children, promoting diversity, improving conditions for workers, and strengthening a community-based economy. I have also led efforts to expand youth sports activities and facilities, summer youth employment, and cooperation with schools.

I have a decade’s experience on the Transit Board and Regional Transportation Commission. With complex traffic issues ahead, I will be an experienced advocate for rational transportation policy and alternative transportation.

In the past I led efforts to purchase Arana Gulch and Moore Creek Greenbelt open space, improve neighborhood parks, build quality affordable housing and establish mobile home rent control. As Councilmember, these quality of life issues will continue as priorities.

Most importantly, I will reach out to people of all points of view, building responsive local government and working to strengthen our community.

Statement of ARNIE LEFF, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Santa Cruz

Occupation: Family Doctor Age: 58

Education and Qualifications: I have the experience necessary to implement those things which will help secure affordable, quality living in Santa Cruz. We can ease traffic gridlock; we can secure more affordable housing. We will address growth, environmental degradation and homelessness with care and concern. We will find a way for the university to house the majority of its students in affordable and environmentally sensitive ways.

As a family doctor in Santa Cruz for 15 years; as an AIDS doctor, I know about advocacy. As a former public health administrator, I know about making things happen and what stops them. As current chair of the Santa Cruz City Citizens' Police Review Board, I know about our local government. As a former environmental health official, I learned about power and pollution; about my responsibility to the public.

I also know about caring, living and dying. I spent half my career in private medical practice caring about many seriously ill members of our community. I spent the other half in local city and county government learning about change and the management of it. I will help balance the often-conflicting approaches to improving our community.

I would appreciate your vote.

Occupation: Native plant restoration. Age: 31

Education and Qualifications: For the past 16 years, I have been an organizer for human rights and a clean environment. I have been an organizer, public speaker, and writer working on issues including opposing U.S. wars, police brutality, union busting, environmental destruction, and the mistreatment of the homeless. My record is one that shows that I am not afraid of taking on the corporate elite and their political representatives. My qualifications will put me in a strong position in office to work with the people to gain rent control; doubling the minimum wage; a living wage for all workers employed by the City; an end to the law that makes it illegal for the homeless to sleep; for low income housing; ending police brutality; police repression; and police harassment of the people of Santa Cruz; ending youth curfews; support for struggles against racism, sexism and homophobia; noncooperation of the City with the INS; no logging on City-owned water reservoir land; for ending the "war on drugs"; and for stopping police harassment of bike riders.

Statement of PETER J. COOK, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Santa Cruz

Occupation: realtor, handyman, surfer Age: 26

Education and Qualifications: Please vote Cook for City Council! I am a business owner, homeowner, realtor, enlightened landlord, 1995 UCSC economics graduate, handyman, surfer and musician who will bring balance to the Santa Cruz City Council. I live in the small home that I built on the Westside. I champion several environmental causes including preservation of our cliffs, removal of cancerous MTBE from local gasoline and native tree planting. I will give any homeowner who calls 458-2035 a free coast redwood tree. The fish-hook must be straightened soon, the increasing UCSC traffic stemmed, and a Santa Cruz to Carmel bike path along the tracks funded. UCSC must house more students or accept fewer; otherwise rents, car-camping, and houselessness will continue to increase. Also, we should not make the city more inviting to car-campers and the homeless. As a councilmember I will concentrate exclusively on Santa Cruz City issues. I don’t support a Westside or Harvey West Metrobase site and suggest a location on HWY 1 south of town. The Lipton site should be developed as we residents see fit before something horrible ends up there (e.g. UCSC’s Terrace Point development).

Get involved, get informed, get out and vote Cook for City Council!

Statement of MICHAEL HERNANDEZ, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Santa Cruz

Occupation: Incumbent

Education and Qualifications: It has been an honor to serve this past four years, during this time our daughters have grown up and my partner Pam and I have celebrated our twenty fifth year of marriage. Our community has enjoyed the prosperity a healthy economy brings. Yet there are many issues in Santa Cruz that we have not addressed. The need for Quality Jobs that pay a Living Wage, Affordable Housing, a Homeless Shelter, a comprehensive Water Plan, Healthy Environment and a realistic approach to our Traffic Problems are my greatest concerns.

I bring to the City Council a common sense approach to solving problems. My diverse background and commitment to the working people of our city are my strengths. I will continue to represent with honor and integrity all fifty six thousand residents of Santa Cruz to the best of my ability.

It is time we move forward together to bring significant change to the quality of our lives.

The next four years will be this Council’s opportunity to seriously address these and many other issues. With your help and continued support I will maintain my sensibility and focus.

Statement of SCOTT BUGENTAL, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Santa Cruz

Occupation: Non-Profit Program Director Age: 41

Education and Qualifications: I am running for City Council because I am concerned about the future of Santa Cruz. We face skyrocketing housing costs, worsening traffic congestion, and a water supply that is stretched to the limit. These problems will require creative thinking and regional approaches in order to be addressed. In the last nine years, I have worked with a wide variety of people in Santa Cruz County on issues ranging from environmental protection to developing new services for senior citizens. Positions I have held include:
  • Transportation Director, Food & Nutrition Services (Lift Line)
  • Lompico Water District Board of Directors
  • Santa Margarita Groundwater Basin Advisory Committee
  • Committee to Preserve the Green Belt
  • Coalition Against Three Strikes
  • Santa Cruz County Long Term Care Commission
  • Elderly & Disabled Transportation Advisory Committee

I received my BA with honors in Politics from UCSC. Additionally, I completed a two-year program in Geology, and graduate coursework in Public Administration.

As a Council member, I would: 1) Develop affordable housing compatible with surrounding neighborhoods, 2) Pursue water projects that would not harm the environment or spur growth, 3) Promote alternative transportation to reduce congestion. I ask for your support.

  • La Coalición Contra Three Strikes.

Statement of MARK PRIMACK, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Santa Cruz

Occupation: Architect and Planner Age: 48

Education and Qualifications: Santa Cruz is changing faster, and faces greater challenges than at any time since the University opened here. In my 24 years in Santa Cruz I have worked to contribute positive, constructive solutions to the problems that have faced our city in the past. I have served as chair of the Zoning Board, the Mission Street Widening Task Force, and the Historic Preservation Commission. I launched the campaign to create the Greenbelt, helped organize the tents that sheltered downtown businesses after the earthquake, and I was a member of Vision Santa Cruz. As an employer, husband and father of two children in public schools, I share the difficulties we now face.

As an architect and planner I have studied the many causes of the current desperate housing crisis in Santa Cruz, and I have explored solutions to the crisis. I have fought against development projects that threatened the character of Santa Cruz, and I have worked hard to support projects that addressed real community needs. If we are to remain a functional, balanced and diverse community we must work together with openness and sincerity to achieve realistic solutions. I promise to do that as a member of the City Council. Thank you.

Statement of ED PORTER, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Santa Cruz

Occupation: Computer Operations, Graphics, and Yearbook Teacher at Santa Cruz High School

Education and Qualifications: I am running for City Council because I believe my years of service on several City Commissions have given me the experience to tackle urgent issues we face. My vision for our city is shaped by many years of teaching at Santa Cruz High, as well as by listening to the concerns of my students and their parents.

In our community, we must guarantee our children a place where housing is affordable, wages are sustainable, water is available, and the environment is unspoiled and healthy.

I pledge to assess these crucial issues thoughtfully. With the participation of our residents, we'll find and implement long term solutions that benefit the entire community. Crises in housing and traffic demand immediate attention. Eight years on the Transportation Commission gave me the background to realize that we need innovative solutions to solve our traffic congestion. I've learned on the Planning Commission several ways we can relieve the housing crisis.

Everyone has an important point of view. I'll listen to all community voices, honoring this most fundamental principle of good government. Together we can solve the problems, that face our city and protect the environmental integrity and ambiance which make Santa Cruz our special place.
