Occupation: Cosmetologist Age: 45

Education and Qualifications: I have been an involved parent in the PVUSD for the past twelve years. I served on the Mintie White Site Council and as Site Council President at E.A. Hall and Lakeview. Last year I was Lakeview’s representative to the Central Zone.

My husband, Robin, and I have resided in the Pajaro Valley for the last 21 years. We have two children. Ruby is a freshman at Aptos High and Ryan is a senior at Watsonville High.

I have been a cosmetologist since 1979. I graduated from Soquel High.

We need to continue to build schools so that all our children have excellent facilities.

I support the third high school at the Harkins Slough site. I strongly support a performing arts center at Aptos High.

I am committed to quality education for all children. I support parental choice for school attendance and parent involvement to improve student achievement. We need to increase our test scores.

I am a proven team player and will work to further unify our district.

I have made a difference for children at the site level. Now I want to make a difference for all the children in the PVUSD.

Statement of MARK McLAUGHLIN, Candidate for
Governing Board Member, Trustee Area 2
Pajaro Valley Unified School District

Occupation: Agricultural Pest Control Adviser/Parent Age: 48

Education and Qualifications: My qualifications for office are: Resident of the Pajaro Valley area working in the local agricultural industry for the past 24 years. My daughter graduated from Aptos High School and is attending the University of California. My son is currently a sophomore at Aptos High.

Through personal experience it is apparent students could have a greater opportunity for success if we review the existing main curriculum components. The interactive math program must prove its value in comparison to other math instruction methods. Has the whole language system of reading instruction proven to be a viable replacement for phonics? Has the bilingual education program benefited the targeted students and justified its expense? Does the current school year calendar with the four-week winter break impede the learning process for students and create a burden for working parents?

District parents deserve the opportunity for review and to present suggestions. I would serve as a conduit for parental ideas to the management of the school district.
