Statement of TONY GUALTIERI, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Capitola

Occupation: Council Member/Physician Age: 76

Education and Qualifications: For the past four years I have worked to make Capitola a better place. In response to residents’ concerns, I voted to institute traffic calming measures in several neighborhoods, to repair the wharf, and to bring a branch library to Capitola. I have voted for budgets that maintain a quality staff, a responsive police force, ongoing street repairs, and human care services to the needy.

Our greatest challenge has been finding affordable housing for seniors and residents on fixed incomes. Using redevelopment housing funds, I voted to assist Loma Vista mobile home owners in the purchase of their park, and first-time home buyers with loans. Partnering with non-profit housing developers, I voted to build rental housing for the disabled at Capitola Road and Clares, and six affordable Habitat for Humanity homes on Brommer.

As a physician, I know the importance of a good environment on our lives. This means managing traffic, preserving our village character, maintaining our outstanding recreation and beach safety programs, restoring the Rispin mansion, and stopping pollution of Soquel Creek.

I want to improve our quality of life, yet keep Capitola unique and financially stable. With your help and your vote, we can do it.

Statement of KATHI HOWARD, Candidate for
Member of City Council
City of Capitola

Occupation: community volunteer / hairstylist Age: 54

Education and Qualifications: As a resident of Capitola over the past 30 years, I have had the opportunity to live here as a business owner, private contractor, home owner, wife, mother and grandmother. Over that period of time there has been much development and many changes within the city.

I feel it is very important to continue to support the mobilehome rent control policy. We should never neglect affordable housing to those who provide many beneficial services to our community.

I fully support the Junior Guards program and would like to see other programs modeled on its success available to our youth.

As your new city council representative dealing with the diversity of issues that will come before the city council affecting all of us, it is important that the council be made up of a variety of viewpoints. With a vested interest in the overall identity of our community, I will approach these items with sensitivity to the whole voice of Capitola.

  • upgrading and safety of the village
  • reestablishment of community enthusiasm
  • residential and business traffic issues
  • judicious use of funds
These are important representative issues
I will hear you
