J.M. Brown
For Santa Cruz City Councilmember

Occupation: Communications Consultant                                        Age: 40

I believe in public service, love our city and want to help make it an even more dynamic place to live and work.

As a former local journalist, I value integrity, accountability and equity. These values will define my work on the Santa Cruz City Council, and I can hit the ground running. My experience enables me to quickly understand key issues and bring people together to develop real solutions.

To enrich the livability of our community, I serve on the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission and the county’s Housing Advisory Commission. I am also an active board member for Arts Council Santa Cruz County and Coastal Watershed Council to support a healthy environment and vibrant arts scene.

The people of Santa Cruz face complex challenges that demand leadership, creativity, determination, competency and teamwork. I will bring a collaborative approach to tackling tough issues, such as increasing the diversity and affordability of our housing stock, improving the San Lorenzo River corridor, and addressing public health and safety needs. I also will work to ensure that our local businesses and neighborhoods thrive, including on the Eastside where my longtime partner and I make our home.
